Virginia E. Herr, 97, of Lititz, and longtime resident of Brethren Village, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Born in Meadowview, Virginia, to parents James Ezra and Merti A. Stuart McClure; she was the eleventh of fourteen children. All of her siblings have preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by three husbands: Fred Herr (2002), John Nelson (1991), and J. Robert Herr (1978).
Virginia will always be remembered for her kind and generous spirit. For many years, she kept an extra place setting at the table just in case someone stopped by to join the family for a meal. Her sons fondly remember the sometimes unusual guests who joined them on these occasions. She was a longtime member of Calvary Church, Lancaster, having joined with husband J. Robert in 1953. She taught children’s Sunday school classes for many years and along with her husband’s financially supported many missionaries and mission projects. In the 1950’s she sponsored home child evangelism classes in her home. She and husband John Nelson served as interim missionaries to Liberia in 1983.
Virginia loved travel. She traversed the North America seven times and traveled to locations in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. After losing her sight, she could still fondly recall many of the places she visited and the people she met along the way.
She is survived by three sons: Robin D. Herr (Wendy Horst), Pensacola, FL., Daryl L. Herr (Barbara Sattier), Conestoga, Brian D. Herr (Terri Smith), Rhinebeck, NY. Step children include: Dr. Theodore Nelson, Fairfax, VA., Joanne Colkitt, Gettysburg, and Kathy Thompson, Albany, N.Y. There are six grandchildren, five step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and fourteen step great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Brethren Village Staff and Virginia’s niece Kathy Eberly and her husband Gary Eberly for the loving and compassionate care given by them for Virginia during her time at Brethren Village.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Virginia’s funeral service at the Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at 11:00 AM.
