Tyler James Shumate, 19, of Elizabethtown, died from injuries as a result of an automobile accident, Wednesday February 4, 2015. Born in Lancaster, Tyler was the only child of James R. Jr. and Paulette (Polly) Sloat Shumate. He was the light of their lives. Tyler was a graduate of Elizabethtown High School class of 2013. From childhood through his teen years Tyler was active in various baseball programs in the Elizabethtown area. He was fond of music, and enjoyed playing his guitar with the Praise Teams when he attended church. Tyler loved bowling. He was also an avid fisherman, always looking for the next big catch. He was employed at Walker Sales & Distribution of Elizabethtown. Tyler always said he loved his job; they were so good to him.
Surviving in addition to his parents is his girlfriend, Lindsey Ritz, Manheim; paternal grandmother Shirley Hart-Sauer, Lancaster; step maternal grandmother Shirley Wolf-Sloat, York; four aunts, Penny Estrada, Lancaster, Cindy wife of Steve Russell, Hellam, Marcia Sloat wife of Dave Weichert, Mount Joy, Suzanne wife of Paul Risser, Harrisburg; three uncles Scott husband of Anna Sloat, York, Donald Sloat, York Haven, Douglas husband of Mary Beth Sloat, York; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather James R. Shumate, Sr., and maternal grandparents Donald and Anna Sloat.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Celebration of Life Service at West Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 740 Green Tree Road, Elizabethtown, on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. There will be a time of visitation with the family on Sunday at the church from 1:30 PM until the time of the service. Friends and family are invited to stay afterward for a meal and fellowship at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tyler’s memory may be sent to West Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 740 Green Tree Road, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
