Stanley G. Metzler, 74, of Manheim, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Born in Rapho Township, he was the son of the late Raphael and Margaret Garman Metzler. Stanley retired as a machinist at the Alcoa Plant in Lancaster after working there for many years. He was also the owner and operator of his own farm in Rapho Township. Stanley was the loving husband of Lucille M. Kohr Metzler and they observed their 38th wedding anniversary in March of this year. Stanley served in the United States Air Force as a Jet Engine Mechanic during the Korean War. He was an inventor; he built the largest horizontal band saw at 36 inches. Stanley also built, modified and invented specialized propellers for ultralight aircraft. His life's passion was flying. He received his pilot's license when he was 16 years old. He owned his own Cessna plane and his own runway on the family farm. In his later years he enjoyed flying his ultralight aircraft. Stanley enjoyed hunting and traveling to the hunting camp in Potter County. He was an avid reader; he would read about the sciences, machinery, and mechanical textbooks. He took pleasure in learning about astronomy, and the NASA Space Program. Stanley also enjoyed a game of golf with friends. Surviving in addition to his wife; are three daughters, Teresa Shank of Middletown, Dawn wife of Michael Sanders of Deland, Fl., Diane wife of Bret Schaller of Sanford, N.C., a son, Thomas R. husband of Emily Henderson of Elizabethtown, thirteen grandchildren, two great grand children, two brothers: Laurence husband of Sandra Metzler of Port Royal, Richard husband of Marian Metzler of Manheim, and a sister, Rosalia wife of Michael Evans of Lancaster. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment is in Mount Joy Cemetery.
