Shelby S. Hackman

Shelby S. Hackman, 72, of Lititz, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Monday, September 5, 2011. Born in Manheim, she was the daughter of the late Fred G. and Grace Demmy Sensenderfer. Shelby retired in 2001, where she was employed as the school nurse and coordinator of all nursing services for the School District of Lancaster; previously she was an instructor for the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Earlier in her career Shelby held nursing positions at several hospitals. She was the loving wife of Willard H. "Bill" Hackman and they would have observed their 53rd wedding anniversary in November of this year. Shelby was a member of the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ Lancaster. Shelby graduated from Manheim Central High School in 1956 and received her nursing education at the Reading Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1959. She later received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Millersville University in 1972. During her employment with the S.D.O.L. she received her nurse practitioner certificate. Her memberships included: Wheatland Garden Club, Lancaster, Manheim Historical Society, Lancaster County Historical Society, Manheim Women's Club where she served as past president, PA Association of School Retirees, and the Lancaster County Association of School Retirees. Shelby volunteered for: Mennonite Central Committee, Meals on Wheels for the Lancaster area, Nearly-Nu Shop, Manheim and the Heritage Center, Lancaster. Shelby had a keen interest and talent for interior decorating and enjoyed all types of gardening. Traveling, needle point, reading and cheering for her favorite sports teams the Phillies and Penn State Nittany Lions were some of her additional interests. Shelby's life's passion was her family and she loved spending quality time with her children and grandchildren. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Michael F. Hackman of Lancaster, the Honorable Christopher A. Hackman husband of Dr. Jill M. Hackman of Lititz, and beloved grandsons: Andrew, Christian, and Matthew Hackman. Memorial services rescheduled from the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church 54 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 11:30 AM with the Reverend Dr. Richard L. Cassel officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Penn Township. Friends may visit with the family at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on Monday morning, September 12, 2011 from 10:30 AM until the time of the service.
