Samuel L. Maurer III, 88, formerly of East Petersburg, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Lancashire Hall, Lancaster. Born in East Petersburg, he was the son of the late Samuel II and Virgie Lengle Maurer. He was the loving husband of Grace Brandt Maurer and they observed their 65th wedding anniversary in January of this year. Sam was the leading custodian for the Hempfield School District, working there for over 34 years; he also was a School bus driver for the district for over 20 years. He was a self-employed carpenter, and worked with his father and uncles to build two of his own homes as well as repairing and remolding his children’s residences. Sam also built handcrafted beautiful grandfather clocks for all of his children. Throughout his life Sam loved farming the homestead land and fixing whatever needed to be repaired on the farmstead. Since 1939 Sam was an active and faithful member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Lancaster. He was a member of the East Petersburg Historical Society. Sam loved vegetable gardening, especially growing asparagus. He had a keen interest in planting chestnut trees.
Surviving in addition to his wife Grace, is a daughter, Patricia L. Sherrard of East Petersburg, two sons: Samuel IV husband of Cheryl Brooks Maurer, and Dale E. Maurer all of East Petersburg, three grandchildren: Andrew Sherrard IV, Christina Levan, Samuel Maurer V, two step grandchildren, Colleen Robbins, Robert Adams, three great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren. Preceding him in death is a brother, Earl L. Maurer and a daughter-in-law, Carol Maurer.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Sam’s Funeral Service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, East Petersburg. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in Sam’s memory to the East Petersburg Historical Society, P. O. Box 332, East Petersburg, PA 17520.
