Robert G. “Bob” Young, 86, formerly of Bird-In-Hand, died peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. Born in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harold and Christine Young. Bob was the loving husband of Emily Myers Young and they would have observed their 58th wedding anniversary on September 24th. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering from Ohio State University. For forty years Bob was employed as an Agricultural Engineer for Sperry New Holland where he was the inventor of several registered patents for the company. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Bob was an active and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and volunteered on many committees. He was a long time member of a Pennsylvania agricultural engineering professional society and was a lifetime member of the Pleasant View Retirement Community Auxiliary. Bob also served on the Leacock Township Zoning Board. His interests included classical music, photography, and navigating his own sail boat in the open waters. He was proud of his Ohio State University education and was a very passionate Ohio State Buckeyes football fan.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: John Young of Rockville, MD., David, husband of Sheri Young of Ashburn, VA., two grandsons: Patrick and Cooper Young, two brothers: Roger, husband of Marguerite Young of Springfield, OH., and Paul, husband of Nancy Young currently of Fort Myers, FL. Preceding him in death is a brother, David Young.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bob’s memorial service from the Hoffer Auditorium at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Interment will be private in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 PM until the time of the memorial service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in Bob’s memory to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
