Robert G. “Bob” Summy, 89, of Manheim, died peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Penn Township, he was the son of the late Elmer K. and Rosa Garman Summy. Bob was the loving husband of Joan Root Summy and they would have observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in June of this year. Bob was a well known cattle buyer and enjoyed the friendships he had with many farmers. For over 12 years he was a partner with Wm. W. McCoy Cattle Company at the Lancaster Stock Yards; he later was employed as a cattle buyer for Moyer Packing Company (MOPAC) in Souderton for 32 years. Following retirement, he drove cars for the Lancaster Car Company. Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church, Manheim, where he volunteered his time with the food bank, helping with the Wednesday Night Suppers, and outside maintenance of the church. In his early years following World War II Bob along with his father took part in what was known as the “Seagoing Cowboys”; they volunteered to tend livestock, horses, and cattle shipped across the sea to Greece where the ship then brought our service men back to the United States upon its return. Bob loved vacationing at the beach with his family in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Surviving in addition to his wife Joan, is a daughter, Holly A. wife of Richard Brosey of Manheim, a son, Scott R. husband of Lynda Getz Summy of Conestoga, three grandchildren: Heather Summy of Woodbridge, VA., Jeffrey Summy of Tucson, AZ., Marc Summy of Conestoga, a brother, John Summy of Schaefferstown, and two sisters: Doris Stroud of Manheim, and Janet Michael of Lititz. Preceding him in death is a brother, Harvey Summy and a sister, Kathryn Wolfe.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bob’s memorial service at the Salem United Methodist Church, 140 North Penn Street, Manheim, on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Manheim Fairview Cemetery.
