Robert A. Varnes, 78, formerly of Manheim, died on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Born in Parkesburg, he was the son of the late Alfred M. and Josephine Dunlap Varnes. For over 30 years Bob was a United States Post Office Mail Carrier for Manheim Borough Post Office; previously he delivered milk locally for Graybill's Dairy. He was the loving husband of Nancy Ulrich Varnes and they observed their 54th wedding anniversary in May of last year. Bob served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and graduated from Parkesburg High School in 1951. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Neffsville. He was also a member of the Manheim Masonic Lodge, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Reading Consistory, and Rajah Shrine. Bob's interests included: herb gardening with his wife, traveling to the family cabin in Sullivan County, bird watching, and beekeeping. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Dwight husband of Tina Loercher Varnes of Elizabethtown, a sister, Edna wife of H. Richard Moore of East Fallowfield, and nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death is a sister, Jean Hartshorne. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square, Manheim on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11:30 AM. Interment will be in Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Sun Hill Road, Manheim, on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 10:30 AM. There will be a viewing on Wednesday morning at the funeral home from 10:30 AM until the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
