Richard L. "Dick" Glatfelter, 84, of Lititz, and formerly of East Petersburg, died on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County. Born in Oregon PA., he was the son of the late Frank and Cora Hunchberger Glatfelter. Dick attended the Barber School of Philadelphia from 1948 to 1950; following school he was employed by the Fred Andes Barber Shop in East Petersburg which he eventually bought and operated for 58 years until he retired in 2008. He was the loving husband of Yvonne "Bonnie" Clark Glatfelter and they observed their 61st wedding anniversary in May of this year. He retired with his wife to Luther Acres from his well known farm on Petersburg Road. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was part of the World Friendship Tour on the USS Valley Forge from 1947 to 1948, traveling through the Panama and Suez Canals and port layovers in 14 countries, an eye opening experience for a Lancastrian in 1947. Dick was a charter member and president of the Red Rose Horse and Pony Club which sponsored many drives and activities for families of which he was very proud. He drove his team of ponies in many local parades with his team pulling a circus wagon with working calliope and band organ. In addition he was often seen driving newlyweds from churches to receptions in carriage. Dick was a very active and faithful member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Petersburg. He was also active with the East Petersburg Historical Society. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Mike Glatfelter of Philadelphia, two daughters: Becky wife of Fred Zinser of Denton, Md., Amy wife of Andy Huber of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., four grandchildren: Patrick Huber, Karl Huber, Greta Huber, Abbey Wroten, and two sisters: Erla Mae wife of Bill McCracken of Lancaster, Lois wife of Lee Bender of Mount Joy. Preceding him in death is a sister, Gladys Glatfelter and four brothers, Leon, Ira, Noah, and Robert Glatfelter. Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church 1905 Broad Street, East Petersburg on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Interment is in East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
