Richard E. “Dick” DeVerter, 84, of Manheim passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Richard S. and Mildred Morrison DeVerter. He was the husband of the late Ruth S. Usner DeVerter who died in 2004. Dick worked forty years at Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster in the Rotogravure department. He proudly served in the United States Navy on the USS Perry DD-844. Dick was an active and faithful member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim where he served as an usher for fifty years. An avid Manheim Central Barons fan: “Go Barons”, he also enjoyed watching the San Francisco Giants. Dick was very athletic and played baseball for the Manheim Senior Team, boxed in the Navy and he enjoyed bow hunting. As a teenager, he was a pretzel vendor in Cabbage Hill, Lancaster. Dick had an incredible sense of humor and loved to spend time with his family, especially vacationing at Martha’s Vineyard. He was the best DAD ever!
Surviving are three daughters, Melinda K. “Mindy” wife of Robert O. Patterson of Manheim, Marianne wife of Mark R. Sheely of Lancaster, Debra L. “Debbie” wife of Abraham M. Gerstenfeld of Asbury Park, New Jersey, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Dolores Derr of Mount Joy, Helen Risser of Lancaster, Leslie Labiak of Manheim and his companion, Ruth Ober of Lititz. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Rote.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Hoffer Auditorium, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM. There will be a public viewing at Hoffer Auditorium on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment in Mellinger’s Union Cemetery, West Cocalico Township.
