The medicine woman of the Eastern Delaware Nations, known as RainBear (RB) Mahoney, passed into her creator’s arms on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, following a long battle with lung disease. Born in Hackensack, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Brodie and Kathryn Yanni Moran and was the wife of the late Thomas C. Mahoney, who passed away in 2015.
RB studied the medicinal uses of the world’s herbs with a practical knowledge and traditional accuracy in order to aid people, native or not, to health through alternative methods.
She was an active and lifelong member of the Lancaster Kennel Club and owner of Ears to Rears Dog Salon in Lititz. RainBear’s life was centered around her love for dogs and she often said that they saved her life. A professional groomer, handler and breeder, she bred DaVinci, a grand-champion standard poodle and was part owner of Parker, who in 2011 at the 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, was the first corded grand-champion standard poodle to be shown since the 1950s.
RainBear’s passion for working with dogs was evident in her calming touch when she was grooming them and in her energy as a handler when she was showing them. She was known for her giving nature and willingly shared her knowledge of dogs and medicinal use of herbs with those she knew and met.
She is survived by a daughter, Michelle, wife of Nathaniel Beck, Lititz and a brother, Brodie Moran of Gettysburg. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Michael Robinson.
