Paul Alton “Tony” Ober, 88, of Akron, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Ephrata Community Hospital. Born in Clay Township, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Edna (Zartman) Ober. Tony was the loving husband of the late Erla Mae (Weit) Ober who died in December of 1994.
An expert rifleman with the U.S. Marine Corps; Tony was a Purple Heart recipient in recognition of his military action during the Korean War. A life-long carpenter, Tony retired following over 40 years of work for area building contractors.
Tony was an active and faithful member of Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoeneck. A lifetime member of the Baron Stiegel Lions Club, he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, which was given to him by his club from Lions Club International in recognition of his faithful dedicated leadership and devoted work for the club. In his early years he was very active member in the Durlach-Mt. Airy Fire Company.
Tony enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Wilkins-Flat Hunting Camp in Tioga County. His interests included attending local sales, auctions, and gathering with his friends at Green Dragon. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters: Theresa, wife of Irvin Shirk of Clay, Nadine Ober of Akron, Gina M. Ober, wife of Robert John Harbison of Ambler; two grandsons: Tony and Jason Shirk; two sisters: Kathryn, wife of Roy Zimmerman of Lancaster, Jean, wife of Carl Lorah of Ephrata; and three brothers: Luther, husband of Lorraine Ober of Manheim, Lester and Carl Ober all of Ephrata. Tony will be lovingly missed by his companion, Zelma Shelly of Brickerville. Preceding him in death is a brother Russell Ober.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Tony’s funeral service at the Brickerville United Lutheran Church, 340 East 28th Division Highway, Lititz, on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 10:30 AM. There will be a viewing at the Buch-Heisey Funeral Home, 216 South Broad Street, Lititz, on Monday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM with an additional viewing at the Brickerville United Lutheran Church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tony may be made to the Baron Stiegel Lions Club, 900 Rebecca Drive, Lititz, PA 17543.
