Nancy U. Varnes, 84, of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, formerly of Manheim, died unexpectedly on Sunday February 12, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert A. Varnes who died in 2012. Born in Rapho Twp. She was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Shank) Shearer. Nancy had worked as a Registered Nurse at Lancaster General Hospital and for Lutheran Social Services of Lititz for 26 years before retiring in 1991. Nancy was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster where she taught Sunday school and Bible School. She enjoyed needle work including crocheting and knitting, tending to her herb garden, travelling and spending time at a cabin in Sullivan County. In her younger years she was a modest but talented artist and a voracious reader of mystery novels.
Surviving is a son Dwight husband of Tina Loercher Varnes of Elizabethtown.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her celebration of life service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Thursday February 16, 2017 at 11:00 AM. There will be a public viewing on Thursday at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment in Manheim Fairview Cemetery will be Private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy’s memory may be sent to the Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County, 625 Community Way, Lancaster PA 17603.
