Mona Lee Hoag, 85, formerly of Manheim and Lititz, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Manor Care Health Center in Pottsville. Born in Grove City, she was the only child of the late Allen and Elma Davidson Miles. Mona, pronounced like the name “Donna”, was named after a friend of the family, who was a member of the Canadian First Nations.
Her father was the owner of the Ideal Bakery in Grove City, where Mona found great joy working in the bakery and decorating wedding cakes.
Following her graduation in 1950 from Linden Hall Junior College in Lititz, where she studied business curriculum, she married the late Edward Eugene Hoag, who was from Grove City and passed away in 1991. They had three children, Jeannie Hoag of Manheim, Sharon Lee Hoag of Ephrata and the late Scott Eugene Hoag, who passed away in 2001.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and after moving to Lititz in 1961, Mona worked in the office accounts department at the former Warner Lambert (now Johnson & Johnson) in Lititz.
Mona was very creative and enjoyed sewing and knitting. In later years, she developed a passion for folk art painting and Norwegian Rosemaling. She was a known artisan in the Lancaster area for her unique paintings on tin and wooden pieces, including furniture. She sold pieces in local shops, including the “Tin Bin” in Neffsville, and took special orders for her work.
She moved from Lititz in 2005 to Gretna Springs, where she could enjoy the woods and watch the birds at the feeders, especially the chickadees.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mona may be made to Heartland Hospice, 4 Park Plaza, Suite 105, Wyomissing, PA 19610 or the Lebanon Valley Conservancy Inc., 752 Willow Street, Suite E, Lebanon, PA 17046.
