Mildred “Millie” Elko Amand, 85, of Lititz, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Lititz, with her husband Clair by her side. Born in Windber, she was a coal miner’s daughter to the late Mike and Susan Chappie Elko.
She was the middle child and helped to care for her sister, Carol, until she graduated from Windber High School. Following graduation, Millie traveled by train with her friend, Betty, to work at RCA in Lancaster. In 1951, she met Clair Amand of Lititz at a square dance that was held at Rocky Springs and they just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
A member of St. James Catholic Church in Lititz, she was an avid reader and enjoyed taking walks and gardening. Millie was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to many people and will be greatly missed. Her trademark birthday advice to her children and grandchildren after noting their age was, “Now act it”.
She is survived by her husband, Clair; two sons, Leland, husband of Karen Amand of Lebanon, Mark, husband of Dru Amand of McMurray; four grandchildren, Megan, Reid, Jeff and Clinton Amand; a great grandson, Corvin Reese and a sister, Carol Sheffer of Gettysburg. She is preceded in death by a brother, John Elko.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Avenue, Lititz, on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be in Millport Mennonite Cemetery, Leola.
