Melvin B. Hess, 69, of East Petersburg, died peacefully at the Lancaster Regional Medical Center on Thursday, May 25, 2017. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Pauline Bear Hess of Rheems, and the late Jonas G. Hess. For over 30 years Mel was a driver for Lancaster Toyota; he also worked for Lancaster County Upholstery and was a delivery person for Nolts Auto Parts. He was a member of Hempfield Church of the Brethren, East Petersburg. Mel was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lancaster, Lodge 299. In his early years Mel was well known locally as an accomplished drag racing driver winning many trophies at the York US 30 Drag Racing events. Throughout his life Mel had a love of cooking.
Surviving in addition to his mother, is a brother, Richard B. “Rick” husband of Nora Hess, of Lancaster, along with several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother, Jonas G. Hess Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mel’s Memorial Service at the Hempfield Church of the Brethren, corner of Stevens Street and Metzler Road, East Petersburg, on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Thursday afternoon from 1:30 PM until the time of service. Interment will be in Hempfield Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
