Mary Jane H. Doster, age 82, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her 2 children and all of her “care giving” family on July 16, 2024 in Houston, Texas. She is survived by her daughters Sheri and Heather, and grandsons Henry and Cameron who knew her as their wonderful “Mimi”. Although Mary Jane has left us, she is now reunited with the “Love of her Life”, John Henry Doster and her beloved first grandson Harrison in Heaven.
Mary Jane was the only child born to Darthula K. Hill and Arthur Hill in Brickerville, Pennsylvania on June 9, 1942. Mary Jane was the quintessential “Lady” and exemplified elegance. From humble beginnings she became a sophisticated woman focused on her growing family, and in helping others when she could. A classic beauty, she was crowned “The Cutest Baby at Hershey Park in 1944” … and went on to win other awards including “National Peach Queen”, “Miss Lancaster County”, “Miss Congeniality” and “Mushroom Princess”. She graduated Warwick High School in 1960, but more importantly this is where she met her “True Love” John Henry Doster. John went on to study at Duke University and they married in 1962 at the Lititz Moravian church in Pennsylvania. This was the start of their life long romance and friendship together. Truly inseparable, they let their passion for each other and life take them on adventures far and wide.
She was a woman of many interests and passions including: tennis, travel, philanthropic endeavors … just to name a few. But her true joy was cooking for family and friends. She didn’t just make a cake … she would make a masterpiece. Everything she prepared was made with the best ingredients, attention to detail, and most importantly love. It was because of this passion and skill that she enjoyed a long career at Williams-Sonoma for over 25 years. The entire family was so appreciative of her culinary delights and willingness to share her secrets. The grandkids in particular loved when Mimi was in charge of meals.
While Mary Jane had many interests, she was primarily dedicated to her partner John Henry and their family together for over 60 years. Their partnership grew from childhood sweethearts to Mary Jane being the matriarch of a tight knit family who loved her greatly. She was a woman of great integrity, big heart and giving spirit. So charming and fun, Mary Jane made life-long friendships all over the world.
Mary Jane’s impact on others has been immeasurable. She will be remembered and missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her and have her touch their life in such an overwhelmingly positive way. While she is now gone … Mary Jane will never be forgotten. It is with love and respect that we say “so long for now” … till we meet again.
