Louella D. “Lou” Young, 88, of Manheim, died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Born in Dubois, she was the daughter of the late Ira V. and Mary Crawford Daughtery. Lou was the loving wife of the late J. David Young who died in October of 2009. In 1952, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Shippensburg State Teachers College. For over 30 years, Lou was a third-grade elementary school teacher in the Manheim Central School District, beloved by her students. Lou was a faithful and active member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Manheim, where she served on Consistory as both a Deacon and Elder. In her early years, Lou helped at the church as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She was a charter member of the Manheim Historical Society, and served as a member and in leadership positions for the Manheim Women’s Club. She volunteered at the Nearly-Nu Thrift Shop in Manheim. Her interests included crossword puzzles, cooking and entertaining, visiting with friends and relatives, and most recently, politics.
Lou’s life-long passion was her family. She often described life with her husband of 54 years as "Heaven on Earth". She was a great Mom and Grandma, enjoying regular contact with each of her kids and delighting in the stories and adventures of her grandchildren, whom she loved deeply.
Accepting of everyone, Lou was youthful despite her years and remarkably adaptable to an ever-changing world. She had a wonderful smile, a welcoming presence, and an ever-widening circle of friends. She had a servant’s heart and humbly cared for many in the community quietly as only she could.
