Joseph C. Flory

Joseph C. Flory, 85, of Manheim, entered into rest on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy. He was the son of the late Samuel Flory and Jennie Barnes Mattis. Joe worked at the former Raymark Industries Manheim for 40 years before retiring in 1988. He was the loving husband of Anna W. Wetzel Flory and they observed their 63rd wedding anniversary in December of 2010. Joseph proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII where he served on the battleship USS Missouri BB-63 and witnessed Japan surrender in Sept. 2, 1945. He was a member of the Lake View Bible Church of Manheim and he attended the former one room Mount Vernon school in Rapho Township. Following retirement Joe volunteered at the Lancaster County Office of Aging, and for Meals on Wheels in the Manheim area. He was a lifetime member of the Manheim VFW Post 5956 and served as Chaplain for Lancaster Navy Club 166. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Wayne Ray Flory of Leola, a daughter, Leita A. wife of Charles F. Walker of Manheim, a grandson, Chad husband of Amy Walker of East Petersburg, three great grandchildren, Olivia, Scarlet and Jackson Walker, a brother, John H. Flory of Middletown, and three sisters: Esther Gingrich of Manheim, E. Jane Smith of Mount Joy, and Fannie Mummau of Virginia. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott C. Walker, two sisters, Anna Mae Forwood, Ruth Myers, and a brother, Benjamin Flory. Joe was a friendly fellow with a smile and a gift of gab for those he encountered along his way. He loved reminiscing about his Navy years, working in his garden, and being a great pop-pop to his family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Pastor John Collins officiating. Interment is in Hernley Mennonite Cemetery, Rapho Township. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers those desiring may send contributions in Joe's memory to Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
