John M. Deaner

John M. "Jack" Deaner, 73, of Millersville, died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 20, 2011. Born in Millersville, he was the son of the late William C. and Edna Bonham Deaner. For over 35 years Jack was a history teacher in the Hempfield School District. Previously he was employed for two years at McCaskey High School, as a special education teacher. Jack received from Millersville University a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education; and a Master's degree in education. He was the loving husband of Marianne Redcay Deaner and they observed their 48th wedding anniversary in April of this year. Jack served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the Church of the Apostles Lancaster. During his teaching career Jack also worked for Brunswick Tours of Lancaster as well as providing guide services for Amish Tours and the Amish Farm and Home Lancaster. Jack worked throughout his life to obtain his life's goal of becoming a certified Gettysburg National Park Guide. Through much preparation, education, and training Jack was awarded this certified guide designation by the National Park Service. He was a member of the Millersville Masonic Lodge. Jack was elected Judge of Elections for Millersville Borough. His other interests included: stamp collecting, reading, big band music, and following the Phillies. His special joys in life were his two granddaughters and being part of their everyday activities. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Elizabeth M. wife of Keith A. Hershey of Safe Harbor, two granddaughters, Samantha E. Hershey, and Cadi A Hershey. Preceding him in death is a sister, Joan Draper and two brothers, Gene and Donald Deaner. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the Church of the Apostles 1850 Marietta Ave. Lancaster, on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent in Jack's memory to St. Labre Indian School 1000 Tongue River Road, Ashland, Montana 59003.
