John Leo Mastran, 95, passed from this life on the afternoon of March 3rd, 2016 in Lancaster, PA.
John was born on March 29, 1920 in Peekskill, NY to Maria Castella and John Mastrangelo. He had 6 siblings, all of whom he spoke about fondly until the end of his life.
Excelling in academics, John graduated from Peekskill High School in 1938, Peekskill Military Academy in 1939, and then attended the University of Virginia, from which he graduated in only 3 years with a B.S. in Commerce. During his time at the University of Virginia, he was elected in Beta Gamma Sigma honorary business fraternity and was invited to become a member of the elite Raven Society. John proceeded into Harvard Business School and graduated in 1943 with a graduate degree in Industrial Administration
John continued into a robust career in the business world. He worked for RCA for more than 40 years and was responsible for the Organization and Management Planning of the company at the highest levels, at a time when its media and technology were changing the face of the country. Highly respected in his field, John was Chairman of an Organization Specialist unit of the Conference Board, an international group that provides organization planning for American companies. In addition, he was a member of Contact USA’s national board, during which time he made a major organizational study which resulted in improvements to the organization’s systems and structure.
To this day, pieces of John’s legacy can be seen first-hand at Rowan University’s RCA Heritage Program Museum, which contains organizational studies and surveys of RCA and its subsidiaries conducted by him from 1950 – 1980. John’s position in the business world was also demonstrated by his name’s inclusion in Who’s Who in the World, 1987-1988.
John married Carol Mastran in 1950 and remained a devoted husband for 64 years. A family man who put his daughters’ welfare first, he often commuted great distances to work in order to provide his family a foundation in Moorestown, NJ. John also left a legacy in his connection to the Moorestown Field Club, one of the country’s oldest clubs. He was elected President of the Club in 1978 and was instrumental in purchasing the Club for the members from the Lydia Stokes Foundation. John was an avid golfer who played at courses throughout the U.S., Ireland and Scotland. He was especially proud of the fact that he had seven-holes-in-one on the 8th hole at the Moorestown Field Club. He was a member of STEM (Save the Environment in Moorestown) and the New Jersey Society of Pennsylvania.
John’s family will remember him as an incredible role model and an intelligent, kind and generous man who cared deeply about his family and friends. John’s incredible dedication to his wife Carol until the end of her life will forever be an inspiration to those who knew him. Even throughout his nineties, he devoured books and would read 2 newspapers daily. He was often a source of wisdom and could always elicit a smile with his trademark jokes and funny stories.
