John H. Flory Sr.

June 29, 1935 — November 22, 2017

John H. Flory Sr., 82, of Middletown, and formerly of Manheim, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital. Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Samuel and Jennie Barnes Flory. John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. For many years John worked as a supervisor at the New Cumberland Army Depot. With a keen interest in the outdoors John served as a PA Game Conservation Officer for Dauphin County for over 29 years. Following retirement John was employed at the Country Market Nursery in Middletown and also at Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown. He was a member of the Rough and Tumble Historical Association, Kinzers, and the Royalton Senior Center. He was an avid outdoorsman and was also an expert marksman. He competed at Camp Perry, Ohio during the Director of Civilian Marksmanship competitions. John had a passion for John Deere Tractors, he enjoyed working and restoring the tractors; and was a life-long collector of anything “John Deere”. He truly believed that “Nothing Runs Like a Deere”.

Surviving is a son, John H. Flory Jr. of Middletown, a daughter, Carolyn J. “C.J.” Flory-MaGatz wife of Glenn MaGatz of Lewisberry, and two sisters: E. Jane Smith of Mount Joy, Fannie Mummau of Virginia. Preceding him in death are three sisters: Anna Mae Forwood, Ruth Myers, Esther Gingrich, and two brothers: Joseph C. and Benjamin Flory.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with additional viewing on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in John’s memory to: Lebanon VA Medical Center Voluntary Services, 1700 South Lincoln Avenue, Lebanon, PA 17042.
