Joan E. Helou, 84, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 24th, 2024, at Pleasant View Communities in Manheim, PA, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on March 28, 1940, in Newark, NJ, to Frank and Helen Nevins, Joan was a woman whose heart overflowed with love for her family and friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Joan’s greatest joy came from raising her three children in West Caldwell, NJ, with her beloved husband, Marcel J. Helou. Their home was a hub of warmth, laughter, and the sweet smells of Joan’s baking—her famous brownies and rice crispy treats were always on hand, ready to share with her children and their friends. Joan’s Polish heritage was evident in the kielbasa she lovingly prepared for Easter and the homemade babka she baked at Christmas, passing down cherished family traditions with each bite.
Beyond the kitchen, Joan was known for her infectious sense of humor, her generous spirit, and her love of life. After her children had grown, she returned to work at CBS Outdoor, where her friendly, welcoming smile became a familiar and comforting sight to all who entered. Joan's love for animals was boundless, and she was known to care for the stray cats at work and made sure the deer in her yard had fresh water and snacks, even during the coldest of winters.
Joan also had a special passion for shopping. She could often be found enjoying an afternoon at the mall or hunting for the perfect bargain. Whether it was finding just the right gift for a loved one or simply enjoying the thrill of a good sale, Joan’s love for shopping was a source of joy and excitement in her life.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children: son James, husband of Jill, of Warrenton, VA; daughters Martine of St. Petersburg, FL, and Danielle, wife of Matthew Deck, of Manheim, PA. Her legacy will be cherished by her nine grandchildren: Justin, Peyton, Britton, Pierce, Keaton, Emily, Brady, Alexandra, and Andrew, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, her brother, and her parents. Joan’s love, warmth, and unwavering generosity will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.
