James E. "Jim" Shaub

James E. “Jim” Shaub, 89, of Manheim, died peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John H. and Mary Richards Shaub. Jim was the loving husband of Thelma Earhart Shaub and they observed their 71st wedding anniversary in September of last year. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Jim was involved in the Dry Cleaning industry since he was 16 years old. In 1961 he purchased the former Brubaker’s Dry Cleaning, Manheim, which then became known as Shaub’s Dry Cleaning, Manheim, and operated the business until 1993. Shaub’s Dry Cleaning continues in Manheim and is owned and operated by Jim’s son Doug Shaub.

Jim was an active and faithful member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim. He was one of the Founders of the Manheim Community Building and was chairman of the Mini-Park construction and beautification project in Manheim. Jim also served as chairman for the Lions Club committee that saved Shearers’s Covered Bridge from destruction in 1971; and relocated the structure to its present location in the Manheim Memorial Park. He was a member and past president of the Manheim Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lions Club International for his work within the Manheim community. Jim also received the Service to Mankind Award from the Manheim Sertoma Club for his dedication and leadership on many projects for Manheim. He was past president for the Manheim Merchants Association, and served on the board for the Manheim Chamber of Commerce. Jim was a member for many years of the advisory board for Fulton Bank, Manheim Branch. His memberships included: Manheim Masonic Lodge 587, Ammon K. Gibble Post 419, Manheim, Manheim V.F.W. Post 5956, Manheim Historical Society, and Scout and Explorer Leader for Manheim Scout Pack 587. Jim was a volunteer for the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association. Jim worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make Manheim a better community. He was dedicated to helping others whenever he could and was a humble leader, a team player, only caring about the results and a project well done.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are three sons: James E. Shaub Jr., Thomas L. husband of Sue Stouch Shaub, Douglas S. husband of Cynthia Shelly Shaub all of Manheim, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, a brother, John H. Shaub of Mount Joy, and two sisters: Anna May wife of George Haldeman and Joanne wife of Mervin Brandt Sr. all of Manheim. Preceding him in death are two brothers and four sisters.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving in the Hoffer Auditorium at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Penn Township. There will be a viewing at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM with Masonic Services following at 8:30 PM. Friends may also attend a viewing on Friday morning at the Hoffer Auditorium from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
