J. William “Bill” Rider, 90, Columbia, formerly of Mount Joy, died unexpectedly after a brief illness at Veteran’s Medical Center, Lebanon, on Thursday, May 30, 2019 He was the husband of the late Thelma J. (Kreiner) Rider on who died in March 2019. Bill and Thelma celebrated 68 years of marriage in November of 2018. Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of the late John and Susan (Dyer) Rider. Bill was a graduate of Mount Joy High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Bill was a member of Chiques United Methodist Church, Mount Joy where he served as a former trustee and usher. Bill was a long-time employee for the Borough of Mount Joy before retiring as Borough Superintendent. He enjoyed hunting, and camping with his family in Potter Co. and Ocean City, MD. He will be remembered as a kind and loving father.
Surviving are six children, Susan wife of James Thompson, Marilyn wife of Jeff Hornberger, Wilma wife of David Simione, all of Elizabethtown, Michael husband of Ann (Heisey) Rider, Cornwall, Alisa Rider, Shermansdale, Dawn wife of Douglas Zook, Mount Joy; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother John husband of Barbara Rider, Lititz; and a sister Dorothy Zechman, Grantville. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by an infant son Billy, a brother Raymond, and four sisters Arlene, Jean, Marie, and Loretta.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bill’s funeral service at Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St. Mount Joy, on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM. There will be a time of viewing at the church Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Camp Hill Cemetery, Mount Joy.
