J. Clyde Root, 87, of Landis Homes, formerly of Manheim, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, March 24, 2016 at his residence. He was the husband of LaVerne (Shenk) Root and they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past February. Born in Hempfield Twp., he was the son of the late Clyde K. and Mary (Harnish) Root.
Working with plants in the outdoors was Clyde’s delight. He was the owner of Root’s Nurseries, Inc. Manheim, until his partial retirement. In 1992 he turned that responsibility over to his sons, Dave and Dwight. A lifetime active member of East Petersburg Mennonite Church, he served in multiple capacities over the years. He also served on various Board of Directors – Camp Hebron, Halifax, PA, Lancaster Mennonite School, Landis Homes, and was an active member of the local camp of Gideon’s International. In 1952 to 1954 Clyde and his wife LaVerne served in alternate service at Fairfield State Hospital in Newtown, CT.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, Douglas C. husband of Barbara (Weber) Root of Harrisonburg, VA, David K. husband of Marcia (Rohrer) Root, Dawn M. wife of Larry J. Zook, Dale E. Root, Dwight L. husband of Mardelle (Weaver) Root all of Manheim, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a sister, Marian Root wife of Clarence Shenk of Lancaster.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main Street, East Petersburg PA on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. There will a public viewing on Monday at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
