Henry K. Mearig Jr., 89, formerly of Park Hill Drive, Manheim, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Henry K. and Elizabeth Dantz Mearig. Henry was the loving husband of Geraldine Smith Mearig who died in August of 1999. Henry had a life-long passion for autos, and was involved with automobiles for over 50 years. He was the owner and operator of new and pre-owned auto dealership, Henry Mearig Inc. East Petersburg for many years; and was a member of the Pennsylvania New Car Auto Dealers Association. In his early years Henry participated in road and hill climb racing; especially the Duryea Hill Climb Race in Reading. He was a member of the PA Hill Climb Association. A veteran, Henry served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim. Henry was a past president and member of Manheim Sertoma. Henry was an enthusiastic supporter of the Manheim community, and enjoyed and supported Manheim Wrestling throughout the years. He will be missed by many former wrestlers who got to know him. Henry enjoyed gardening and loved to learn about new plants he could grow around his home. He was special to his family and friends. Henry had a kind and generous heart, a positive outlook; and he encouraged people in all walks of life.
Surviving are two daughters: Patricia A. wife of Donald L. Hoffer of Brickerville, Holly E. wife of Michael J. Bires of Manheim, two sons: Michael H. Mearig of Lititz, Jonathan D. husband of Doris Stroud Mearig of Manheim, ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a sister, Joan Gast of Lancaster. Preceding him in death was a daughter-in-law, Susan Mearig.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Henry’s funeral service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:30 PM. There will be a viewing on Friday evening at the funeral home from 6:30 PM till 8:00 PM with additional viewing time on Saturday afternoon from 1:30 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be held in Manheim Fairview Cemetery.
