Gladys Matora “Torie” H. Hostetter, 98, formerly of East Petersburg, died peacefully in The Courtyards at Brethren Village under hospice care on Thursday, August 25, 2016. She lived at Brethren Village in various campus locations since 1993. Born in East Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Elam W. and Esther Martin Hollinger. She was the wife of the late Clarence Wilbur Hostetter who died in 1988. Torie was an active and faithful member of Hempfield Church of the Brethren where she was a deaconess, choir director, organist, pianist and chorister for many years. A talented musician, Torie enjoyed teaching piano students in her home. She was well known for her musical abilities and many times she played hymns and other tunes without music notes. In her younger years, Torie served as rehearsal accompanist for the Acapella Choir and later served as pianist for the Lancaster County Senior Orchestra. She was also a member of Farm Women #5.
Surviving is a daughter, Betty Jean “BJ” wife of Barry Haverstick of Lancaster, a son, Carl husband of Ellen Hostetter of Dover, two grandchildren, Christopher husband of Marianne Hostetter of Carrollton, Texas, Devon wife of Todd Byers of Pottstown and their children, Haley and Ava Byers, a sister, Jean Zurin of Brethren Village and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by nine siblings, Frances Mummau, Miriam Charles Weaver, J. Lloyd Hollinger, Blanche Miller, Lester Hollinger, Harold “Tom” Hollinger, Esther Shelly, Elam Hollinger Jr., and Corinne Nissley.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Torie’s memorial service at Hempfield Church of the Brethren, corner of Stevens Street and Metzler Road, East Petersburg on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 6:30 PM with Pastor Pete Kontra officiating. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Please omit flowers.
