George W. “Sonny” Farmer, Jr., 77, of Manheim, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, Lebanon. Born in Penn Township, he was the son of the late George W. Sr. and Bernice W. Earhart Farmer. George was a machine operator for Federal Mogul for 26 years, and he also delivered papers for Lancaster Newspapers.
George was a proud U.S. Army veteran, and was passionate about veterans’ affairs throughout his adult life. He served with the First Armored Division and was a member of the Army Reserves following his active service. He received several awards, including the Soldier’s medal 2 consecutive years. He was a member of the Steelworkers local #1035, AmVets Post #19, and the American Legion Post #419, Manheim. George enjoyed fishing, camping, travel, and was a fan of NASCAR, particularly driver Bill Elliott.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert and Jere Farmer, two sisters, Patricia Sauder and Bonnie Burkey, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Farmer.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend George’s funeral service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, and also on Friday afternoon from 1:30 PM until the time of the service. Interment with Military Honors will be in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in George’s memory to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
