Gene Thompson, 89, formerly of River Hills, Lake Wylie, S.C., and Richmond, Indiana, died peacefully on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster. Born in Cynthiana, IN., he was the son of Carlos and Carrie Simpson Thompson. Gene was the owner and operator of Gene Thompson Motors in Richmond, IN. He graduated from Evansville University in Indiana, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Gene was the loving husband of Alice Bernhard Thompson. They observed their 20th wedding anniversary in August of last year. He was a member of the Evansville Indiana Masonic Lodge # 64, the River Hills Country Club, and was a former member of Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, N.C. Gene had a life-long passion for golf and he felt fortunate to play at St. Andrews, Muirfield, and Turnberry Golf Courses in Scotland. Gene's many interests included: tennis, carving, painting, boating, fly fishing, and traveling. He had an appreciation for fine foods and enjoyed cooking. Surviving in addition to his wife, are three sons: Addison, husband of Lesa Thompson of New York City, Mitchell, husband of Deb Thompson of Charleston, S.C., Troy "Ty", husband of Valerie Thompson of Winston Salem, N.C., a daughter, Suzanne Tolson of Fort Mills, S.C., a step daughter, Carol, wife of K. Gregory Sangrey of Landisville, a step son, Robert, husband of Maria Bernhard of York, nine grandchildren, four step grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his memorial service from the Eagle Commons at Eagle Wing in Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Chaplain Miriam Cruz officiating. Interment is in Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Penn Township. Friends may visit with the family in Eagle Commons on Saturday morning from 10:30 AM until the time of the service.
