Eugene K. Metzler, 87, of Manheim, died unexpectedly on Monday, September 15, 2014 while visiting his wife at the Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Penn Township, he was the son of the late John N. and Mary B. Kready Metzler. He was a 1944 graduate of Manheim High School. Eugene was the loving husband of Jean S. Hollinger Metzler and they observed their 65th wedding anniversary in February of this year. For most of his life Eugene was the owner and operator of the family farm in Rapho Township. Eugene also worked throughout the years for the Manheim Auto Auction, helped at numerous farmers markets for Richard M. Heagy’s Meats, and S. Clyde Weavers of East Petersburg, and the former Carper’s Meats in Manheim. He was an active and faithful member of Erisman Mennonite Church where he served as a former trustee. His interests included: photography, watching his bluebirds, caring for sheep in his beautiful pasture, flower gardening, playing the mandolin, and listening to Southern Gospel Music. He will be remembered by his family for his strong Christian faith, for his passionate love for family, and for his gentle and caring spirit.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Jean, are four children: K. Marlene wife of Gary L. Knode of Shippensburg, Darwin husband of Pat Hosler Metzler of Lititz, Gerald husband of Mary Stoudt Metzler of Harleysville, C. LeAnn wife of Rick Parmer of Mount Joy, 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, four brothers: Earl husband of Rhoda Metzler of Willow Street, Richard husband of Reba Metzler, Glenn husband of Faye Metzler, Carl husband of Marian Metzler all of Manheim, and a sister, Joann wife of John Herr of Lititz.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Eugene’s memorial service at the Erisman Mennonite Church, 8 South Erisman Road, Manheim, on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday afternoon from 2:30 PM till the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Erisman Mennonite Cemetery.
