Esther Mae Becker, 96, formerly of Lancaster Junction, Manheim, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, June 17, 2016 at Landis Homes Retirement Community, Lititz. Born in Rapho Township, she was the daughter of the late Jacob E. and Mary Peters Becker. Esther taught English for 35 years in Ethiopia under Eastern Mennonite Missions. She began in the School for the Blind, where she once met the Emperor Haile Selassie, spent many years in the Nazareth Bible Academy, and ended her career at the University of Addis Abeba.
In 1951, she received a BS in Education from Eastern Mennonite University, Virginia and in 1964; Esther received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Syracuse University, NY. She was a member of Kauffman’s Mennonite Church, Manheim where she taught Sunday school. Esther was loved by folks around the world.
Surviving is a brother-in-law, Clayton R. husband of Martha Stahl Nissley of Landis Homes and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rachel Stoltzfus and Vera B. Nissley.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend her memorial service at Landis Homes Retirement Community, WEST BETHANY CHAPEL, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz, Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11 am. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. Interment will be private in Erisman Mennonite Cemetery, Manheim.
