Eleanor S. Sloan

February 25, 1918 — July 31, 2024

Eleanor Sharpe Barbour Sloan of the Long Community in Lancaster ended her earthly journey on July 31, 2024. Giving praise and gratitude to her Lord for a long life of 106 years. Born in Philadelphia, reared in Narberth, PA, she was the daughter of the late Linwood Sharpe of West Chester and Alama (Krieg) of Philadelphia. Eleanor graduated from Lower Merion High School and attended Mulvey Institute in Philadelphia. For twenty years she worked for the Maytag Company as a Home Consultant giving cooking shows and fashion shows. She was the recipient of many awards from Maytag, and her scripts for the shows were used nationally. Her Maytag career ended when she accepted the position as Supervisor of the Hershey Foods Test Kitchen. During her tenure at Hershey Foods, she revised the classic 1934 Hershey Cookbook; it became a best seller. In addition to her busy professional life, she became a Contact USA volunteer. After her marriage to G. Walter Sloan in 1971 she joined Contact Lancaster, was active on many committees, served for 37 years, and was volunteer of the year in 1982, and had amassed more than 4500 volunteer service hours. Eleanor was very involved in the life of the United Methodist Church, first in Narberth and then at Chiques UMC in Mount Joy. She taught Sunday school for 56 years. At Chiques she served on many committees and commissions, was a Lancaster district officer, and was co-editor of the Chiques Chronical. She was an avid reader and skilled at needlework, making beautiful quilts, counted cross stitch, needlepoint, and embroidered pieces which she lovingly gave to family and friends.

Eleanor is survived by a son, Charles L. Barbour (Katy Kempe) of Firestone, CO; stepchildren Dr. Richard Sloan (Alice Sectish) of York, PA, Marge Kligerman (Robert, deceased) of Rockwall, TX, Barbara Miller (Glenn) of Elizabethtown, PA, and Alan (Sue Bassalin) of Lancaster, PA; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, G.Walter Sloan, and by her stepdaughter Carolyn Blakeslee.
