Elam S. Hoffer, 88, of 143 North Pitt Street Manheim died peacefully at his granddaughters home on Tuesday, April 27, 2010.
Born in Penn Township, he was the son of the late Menno H. and Verna Mae Shank Hoffer. Elam worked for over forty years for the Sensenich Corporation Lititz as a machinist propeller specialist. He also enjoyed working as a clerk for the Roots Country Market And Auction Manheim for over thirty-four years. Elam was the loving husband of Esta M. Enck Hoffer and they would have observed their 66th wedding anniversary in May of this year. He was a faithful and active member of Ruhls United Methodist Church Manheim where he served as a Steward and on the Pastor Parish and Building Committees. An avid hunter and fisherman he was a member of the Cedar Hunting Club in Sullivan County where he had served as both treasurer and president. He was a life member of the Manheim Sportsmens Association and the National Rifle Association. Elam was a life member of the Manheim Lions Club and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lions Club International in 2009. He was also a life member of the Manheim Historical Society. Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking and building furniture and other items from his own wood shop.
Surviving in addition to his wife, is a granddaughter, Lisa M. Seiders of Manheim, a great grandson, Alex William Seiders of Manheim, a brother, J. Kenneth husband of Lois Hoffer of Manheim, two sisters: Elva Hein of Lititz, and Geraldine wife of Clarence Swope of Manheim. Preceding him in death are two daughters: Carol Joan Oberholtzer, Thelma Jean Hoffer and a grandson, Mark Oberholtzer.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the Ruhls United Methodist Church 4810 Elizabethtown Road Manheim, on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Rob Timlin officiating. Interment is in Brickerville Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Elizabeth Township. There will be a public viewing at the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square Manheim on Tuesday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. There will be an additional viewing at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
