Dorothy E. Sumpman, 96, of Mount Joy, died peacefully, Monday February 4, 2019 at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster. She was the widow of the late Clyde R. Sumpman who died in 2001. Born in Mount Joy she was the daughter of the late Hiram R. and Lillian M. (Roth) Detweiler. Dorothy assisted with farm operations at her family farm, and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was a graduate of the Mount Joy High School, class of 1940, and she attended Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Dorothy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Joy and was a former choir member. A member of Farm Women’s Society #8, early member of the Mount Joy Chorus, and was the first musician from Mount Joy to qualify for the State Band. Dorothy’s other interests included cooking, listening to music, reading, gardening, and enjoyed taking vacations with her family.
Surviving are two daughters Linda, wife of W. Roger Thome, Osage IA, Sylvia, wife of David A. Moyer, Mount Joy; two grandchildren Dan husband of Kristine Thome, Billings MT, Betsy wife of Joel Schillerstrom, Lone Tree IA; 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Helen, wife of Richard P. Bard, Lancaster, and a brother Robert E. Detwiler.
