Donald C. Irish Devine, 93, formerly of East Gramby Street, Manheim, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Elmcroft Community of Lebanon.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Hattie Hendricks. In 1982 Don retired from the Fuller Company in Manheim where he worked as a machinist for over 37 years; following retirement he worked for the Manheim Auto Auction for more than 10 years. Irish served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bulmer Destroyer during WWII in the Asiatic Fleet. He was the loving husband of the late Florence M. Hoke Devine who died in 1995.
Throughout his life Irish had a passion and love for his church; a very active and faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church Manheim; he served in the church on the Administrative Board, as a Steward, Custodian, Sunday School teacher, choir member and on many committees. His memberships included the Hope Fire Engine and Hose Company Number One of Manheim, the V.F.W. Post 5956, the American Legion Post 419 all of Manheim, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. His other loves: having fun,Fried Oysters; Mince Meat Pie and mostly, spending time with his family, close friends and co-workers and being a very special Grandpa to his grandchildren.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Dustin husband of Sheila Devine of Newmanstown, Marybeth Higgins fiance of Michael Henry of Palmyra, two great grandchildren, Cara Higgins, Keira Devine, a daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn McCullough Devine of Lancaster, a sister, Margaret Hoefel of Compton, CA. Preceding him in death is a son, Darrell D. Devine and a sister, Eleanor Smith.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church 48 Market Square, Manheim, PA on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 9:00 AM with Pastor Jeffrey C. Schell officiating. Interment is in Mount Hope Cemetery Myerstown. There will be a public viewing at the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square Manheim, PA on Sunday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. There will be no viewing on Monday morning at the church.
