Daniel Allen Nicholls, of Elizabethtown, and formerly of Passaic County, N.J., passed away on November 19, 2018 at the age of 75 years. A native of Indianola Iowa, Daniel grew up on a farm with his parents Allen Merle and Mary Ellen, alongside his two siblings, Michael and Diane. Dan went to Indianola High School where he played the halfback position in football (he was known for his speed). During his senior year, his football team was undefeated and he was also selected as senior class president.
After this, Dan went to Shelton College in northern New Jersey (which is now NJ Botanical Gardens), where he played soccer and basketball, and met many wonderful friends that lasted a lifetime. From there he attended Farleigh Dickinson where he received his master’s degree and taught in the West Milford educational system. His students loved him! He taught social studies, history, as well as coached a variety of sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis. Daniel also served as a short-term missionary at Santiago Christian School in the Dominican Republic. He taught seventh grade students, as well as served as the principal.
Daniel’s hobbies included playing tennis, coaching, and hiking in the Ramapo mountains of North Jersey. Dan was very proud of his children and grandchildren. His favorite Scripture was Proverbs 3:5&6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.”
Dan will be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Michael Nicholls and Diane Willits, as well as by Meredith Nicholls and their children, Brett, Tim, Jamie, and Michelle, and his grandchildren, Jack, Caleb, Addison, Stella, Sterling, Tanner, and Lincoln. Daniel will not only be lovingly remembered as a dedicated coach, teacher, and father, but also as a wonderful grandfather who delighted in spoiling his grandchildren whenever the opportunity arose.
A memorial service will be held at Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim, (in the village of Penryn), PA., on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Visitation at church on Saturday from 1:30 pm until the time of service, followed by a light meal.
