Clair M. Amand, age 87, of Lititz, passed away after a brief illness, at the Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center on Monday, January 23, 2017. He is preceded in death by Millie, who passed away less than five months ago. She was the love of his life and his wife of 64 years.
He was born in Mount Joy, the third of nine children to J. Henry and Adele Smeltzer Amand. He spent the next 23 years on the family farm which borders both the Manheim and Warwick Township lines. The love of the farm stayed with him throughout his life. He wrote a book about it titled “The Sale” documenting his family’s life and years on the farm.
Back in the 1940’s and early 1950’s his father owned the Red Rock hunting camp in Tioga County. The good times that were had by Clair and his eight siblings made for priceless stories. It was the site of Millie and Clair’s honeymoon.
Besides his marriage to Millie and devotion to his family, Clair had many diverse pleasures. His love of chocolate prompted him to tell Millie that she could bake any kind of cake as long as it was chocolate. His choice of transportation was usually Buick and the color of choice was Black. He owned 15 in his 71 plus years behind the wheel.
Clair was an avid Kissel Hill and Lititz area historian, spending many hours speaking with family, neighbors and friends to compile information. He thoroughly enjoyed researching family genealogy. He worked for the former Alumax Aluminum Corporation and also held a real estate license at the same time.
His kind and gentle nature prompted Millie to tell her sons, “If you grow up to be half the man your father is, you will be okay”. They take pride and honor in being Clair’s sons. Clair was a gentleman in the truest sense.
He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.
He is survived by two sons; Lee Amand, husband to Karen of Lebanon and Mark Amand, husband to Dru of McMurray, PA., four grandchildren, Megan, Reid, Jeffrey, Clinton and a great grandson, Corvin Reese.
He is also survived by eight siblings: J. Henry Amand, Jr., N. Frank Amand, Jean Hollinger, Kathleen (Kitty) Rollman, Dorothy (Dot) Wida, Janet Savoca,
R. Lowell Amand & Carole Miller.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center for the warmth and caring shown to our dad during the time of his greatest need. Their compassion and care will not soon be forgotten.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:30 AM. with the Reverend James O’Blaney C.Ss.R.
