Betty Schmick Hollinger, 96, of Manheim, and formerly of Harrisburg, entered into Heaven on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, where she had been a resident for over 16 years. Born in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Jessie Bretzler DeFontes. Betty was the wife of the late Charles Hollinger who died in 1999; her first husband was the late John M. Schmick who died in 1978. In 1987 Betty retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Harrisburg office where she worked as a secretary. Betty graduated from the former John Harris High School now Harrisburg High School, and the Pennsylvania College of Business. She was an active, faithful, and charter member of Brookfield Bible Church, Harrisburg; and attended Grace Church of Lititz with her family in her later years. Betty and her first husband John Schmick were among the founding parents of Harrisburg Christian School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. Betty especially enjoyed church, family, and life at Pleasant View Retirement Community. She had a deep and abiding love for God and her family.
Surviving are two daughters: Susan wife of Larry Miller of Marysville, Miriam “Mim” wife of John Kegarise of Manheim, two stepsons: Charles Hollinger of Linglestown, Larry husband of Patricia Hollinger of Grantville, five grandchildren: Amy Miller, Lori Miller, Alison wife of Jacob Rainwater, Ellen wife of Christopher Vogt, J. Douglas husband of Renee Kegarise, five step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren: Anya, Micah, Elaina Rainwater, Simon, Emery, Callie Vogt, Clara, Kipton, Paxton Kegarise, and step great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews who were endearing to her. Preceding her in death are two sisters: Elaine Bearinger, Evelyn Gilberg; and a step grandson.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Betty’s funeral service in the Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 10:30 AM. There will be a viewing in the Hoffer Auditorium on Thursday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be private in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
