Betty Jane Overly

Betty Jane Overly, 86, of Manheim, died peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2011 at Manor Care of Elizabethtown. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John Sr. and Carolyn Dommel High. Betty was the owner of the former "Papa Bears Tavern" "Gateway to the North" located along route 72 north of Manheim Borough. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Overly who died in 1986. Betty was a lifetime member of the Elstonville Sportsman Association where she served 12 years on the board of directors and 14 years on the sporting clays committee. Betty's other memberships included: Mount Joy American Legion Auxiliary, and in her early years served as president, and also president of District 9; a lifetime member of the Manheim VFW Auxiliary, and served on committees, for the Sertoma Club and the Elstonville Motorcycle Club for the Fake Snake Hunt to Benefit the Children's Miracle Network. In her early years she worked for Hubley Toys in Lancaster, and also was Secretary/Treasurer of AFL-CIO while working there; she moved onto Hamilton Watch Co. East Petersburg where she received many awards from the government for her quality control work for the company. Throughout her life Betty always worked as a waitress, cashier and hostess; for 24 years at the Mount Joy American Legion and other restaurants, the former Baron Stiegel and Keith's Family Restaurant Manheim. Betty's interests included: tap dancing, singing, entertaining and making friends. Surviving is a daughter, Mary W. wife of Jacob E. Brown of Mount Joy, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death is a daughter, Patricia "Pat" A. Kulp, a son, Robert W. Overly Jr., and two brothers, John G. and Leroy R. High. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service at the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Betty's memory to the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired 244 North Queen Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.
