Bernard M. Barney Hook, 95, formerly of East Meadow Road, Manheim, died peacefully on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Bernard M. and Florence E. Flora Hook. Barney worked as a district manager for the Lipton Tea Company Lancaster; following retirement he was employed part time for Weis Food Markets in the Lancaster area. He was a United States Army veteran serving as a Tech Sergeant in the 69th Infantry Division during World War II. Barney wrote and sent many stories of his World War II experience to Tom Brokaw American television journalist and author. Tom Brokaw sent personal letters to Barney in response to the stories over the years. Barney was of the Episcopal faith. His interests included: traveling, bird watching, reading, and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan. In his younger years he was a caddie at Meadia Heights Golf Club and he enjoyed watching golf throughout his years. Everyone who knew Barney marveled at his sense of humor and his story telling ability. Barney is survived by cousins and his former wife Miriam Hook of Rosemont. Preceding him in death is a sister, Emma.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View Retirement Community 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM. Friends may visit with the family at the Hoffer Auditorium on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Friends and family will meet at the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square Manheim for interment services on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 1:00 PM to follow in procession promptly to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, for a 2:00 PM service.
