Bernard J. “Bern” Grbach, D.D.S.
The Gentle Dentist
Bernard J. “Bern, Bernie, Uncle Bernie” Grbach, 55 of Manheim, died on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Born in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Daniel C. and Florence Razny Grbach. He was the loving husband of Alaine Luszczewski Grbach, and they observed their 21st wedding anniversary in October of last year. Bern received his Bachelor’s Degree from Washington and Jefferson University and his Dental Degree from Georgetown University. He was the first member of his extended family to be admitted to a school of medicine. Bern put himself through dental school by working as a waiter, first at Clyde’s of Georgetown, and then the Old Ebbitt Grill. If he had his way, he would have remained a server and opened a restaurant. (But then he met Alaine).
Bern started his dental career in Ohio, and moved to Lancaster in 1990. Bern’s patients and employees nicknamed him the “Gentle Dentist”. When he moved his practice, he took their suggestion and renamed it Gentle Dental Care. Bern operated Gentle Dental Care for over 20 years. He loved his patients and his employees. Bern retired due to health reasons, and moved to a small farm in Penryn. He was a member of the Hamilton Club and their bowling league. Bern was a gourmet chef and an artist. He was happiest entertaining friends and family.
Bernie always wanted a dog as a child, and after he met Alaine they adopted one, which increased over the years to five. He always said, we can have a Basset Hound, but just ONE Basset Hound at a time.
Surviving in addition to his wife Alaine, are his sisters in his heart, Diana Ramos Cook and her children Sean and Gabby, Joan Grbach Danoff, her husband, Bill, and their son Owen, and Lauren Lucheske Boerlin, her husband Craig, and their children Myles, Alaina and Maria. And his Best Friend David, his Wife Nancy, and their children, Megan and Trey.
His dear Nephew Nathaniel Boerlin predeceased Uncle Bernie. As did his fellow artist and Mother-in Law, Alberta, and his Father-in-Law, Leonard.
Bern is also survived by his Brothers, their wives and their children, Dr. Bruce and Theresa, Alex and Zachary. Mark , JoAnn and Grace, and Dr. Vincent X. Grbach.
Services for Bern will be announced at a later date. If you wish to make a contribution in Bern’s memory, he would prefer that you choose your own charity.
