Basilia Marn Aparicio, 86, died peacefully Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster Countys Mount Joy campus after a long struggle with Alzheimers disease.
Born July 20, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Mercedes Marn and Juana Antonia Aparicio of Estanzuela, Guatemala. She studied at the Hospital Americano in Guatemala City, earning her nursing degree in 1948. She spent over thirty years as a registered nurse working for United Brands in Honduras where she raised her three children. Her life was devoted to serving others through her work and deeply held Christian faith. Upon retirement from nursing, she worked at Covenant House in New Orleans caring for at-risk and homeless youth. After moving to Michigan, she volunteered at the Central County Center for Seniors in Berrien Springs. In 1997, she was proud to receive her American citizenship.
Basilias faith was very important to her and she could often be heard reading her Bible or singing hymns. She is survived by her three children: Francisco Cleaves, husband of Julie of Manheim; Marie Ivonne Jarqun Marin of St. Rose, Louisiana; and Mara Ruth Acosta, wife of Richard, also of St. Rose; two grandchildren: Marie Antonia Cleaves, wife of Andrew Rothacker of Lancaster, and Stephanie Rae Cleaves of Manheim.
Interment will be held privately in White Oak Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Penn Township. A private memorial service led by the Reverend Ken Higginbotham will be held at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community this week followed by a service at a later date at the Evangelical Reformed Church of La Lima, Honduras.
