Amos H. Cassel, 91, formerly of Fruitville Pike, Manheim, died peacefully on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.
Born in Penn Township, he was the son ofthe late Charles D. and Emma Heisey Cassel. As a young boy he enjoyed drawing and painting eventually founding Cassel's Sign and Furniture Shop, Manheim in 1945.He meticulously worked with signs, refinishing antiques and hand decorating chairs.The sign business continues operating with the family ownership to this day.Amos was the loving husband of Miriam Miller Cassel and they would have observed their 69th wedding anniversary this November.He was a member of White Oak Church of Brethren, Manheim serving as a deacon.During his lifetime Amos made "Prayer Mottos" in English and Spanish that were given by the thousands to people throughout the US, Africa and Guatemala.He was a member of Gideons International Lancaster North Camp.In 2002 he wrote and published a book entitled "We called him Papa", a history of his father's life and the Cassel family. He and his wife enjoyed spending many of their winters in North Fort Myers, Florida. Amos enjoyed music and playing hymns on his harmonica that he learned to play as a young boy. He loved visiting and playing the harmonica for the other residents at United Zion Retirement Community.
Surviving in addition to his wife, is a daughter, Joyce E. wife of Stanley R. Boyer of Thomasville, a son, Dale E. husband of Suzanne Heisey Cassel of Manheim, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, a brother, David H. Cassel of Manheim and two sisters: Mary H. Wagner and Elizabeth H. Groff, both of Manheim.He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Emily Renae Nolt, one brother, Jere H. Cassel, and two sisters: Martha H. Patches and Emma H. Caplinger.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the White Oak Church Of The Brethren, 1211 North Penryn Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 10:30 AM with Ministers: Samuel M. Cassel, Carl R. Groff, Mervin C. Groff, officiating. Interment is in Longeneckers Brethren Cemetery, Lititz. There will be a public viewing at the church on Monday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with additional viewing on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
